EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, PRINTS AND ARTWORK

by 4 ESTABLISHED BRITISH ARTISTS:

HOYLAND PREWETT,

HOYLAND SLOAN

This promises to be an exceptional and rare exhibition by 4 British artists who have lived and worked in the Lot valley since the 1980’s.

Following in the footsteps of the renowned artist Anthony Gross who lived nearby at La Boulve from 1954 until 1984 each artist continues in their own manner to celebrate the diversity and richness of the landscape and life in the Lot Valley. Using traditional materials the range between them is enormous – from small intimate studies taken from life to large scale dynamic/ambitious oils. From animals, portraits of local personalities, studies of summer fetes to intense still lives, grand vistas and panoramic views. The temperament of the works are also varied from exigent, structural and intense to bold, resourceful expressive and witty. All 4 artists work can be described as Contemporary Figuration and offers a continuation of 20th century european figurative painting.

Mary McMillan Sloan: Wimbledon College of Art, Brighton and Sussex Universities, Morley College & CityLit London. Mary specialises in printmaking, her monotypes are inspired by Spanish Expressionists and her etchings and Lino prints have been inspired by living in the Lot.. Mary regularly curated exhibitions and exhibited at the Brighton Festival & Europe. Her works are in private collections spread across four continents.

Statement:

Exploring and describing the enduring landscape of the Lot through a variety of printmaking methods is a source of great peace and joy to me as I continue developing my language of mark making. I greatly admire the spontaneity and fluidity of mark making by Raoul Dufy and Anthony Gross.

John Hoyland: John is an artist and concert pianist. After studying piano in London with Alexander Kelly, Maria Curcio and Tamas Vesmas he then continued his studies at Camberwell School of Fine Art where he met Hilary – a lively and talented young artist. – They have exhibited since then regularly in France and England, in St John’s Smith Square, London at the ‘Three Choirs Festival’ or ‘Festival de la Baie’ (Mont St Michel).

Johns paintings are often quite large formats, they come from an immersion in nature. He paints in front of the subject from which a pictorial architecture is born – drawn from his sensations of space and light.

Statement Hilary Hoyland: I am attracted by very diverse means of expression (engraving, collage, painting) and have a very sensual relationship with the material. I aim to communicate the intensity of my sensations in front of the landscape or objects bathed in the light.
